Recently, the waste collection room at Aibo Fourth Village in Xinhong Subdistrict, Minhang District, Shanghai, has undergone an integrated upgrade and is now officially in operation. As the first waste collection facility in Xinhong Subdistrict to be renovated according to Shanghai’s 2.0 version of the high-standard model residential area for waste sorting, the changes are significant. Among them, a newly introduced “secret weapon” that keeps wet waste from leaving the community—the wet waste processor—is particularly eye-catching.

Integrated Sorting and Treatment

This quiet, square-shaped “secret weapon” is the TRANS-type perishable (wet) Waste Processing equipment, independently developed and produced by Nanda Environmental Protection.

After residents consciously sort their daily waste, the garbage is processed separately in this collection room. About 200 kilograms of wet waste are fed into this device, where a special microbial formula converts it into reusable organic nutrient liquid. By adding Nanda’s performance enhancer and mixing with water, this nutrient solution can be used by residents for daily planting, and it also supports fertilization and irrigation for local landscaping, achieving green recycling and Waste Reduction at the source.

Residents have expressed great satisfaction with this “new face.” The processor occupies a small footprint, consumes little energy, has low operating costs, processes waste quickly, and—most importantly—produces almost no disruptive noise, odors, or wastewater problems typical of traditional wet waste facilities. The nutrient solution produced can even be taken home for gardening. Once an avoided, unpleasant place, the wet waste processing station has now become a popular community hotspot.

Integrated Education and Awareness

The waste collection room at Aibo Fourth Village also serves as a community environmental education hub. It is thoughtfully divided into a low-carbon science area, a leisure activity zone, and an interactive planting area. These spaces are integrated to create an environment that combines education and fun. Various planting boxes are filled with vegetables and herbs, nurtured with the organic nutrient liquid produced by the wet waste processor—a vivid example of waste-to-resource recycling.

Next to the wet waste processing room, the community’s environmental education house frequently hosts DIY creative workshops themed “Waste Sorting: Turning Trash into Treasure.” Residents transform old cardboard, cans, plastics, and clothes into eco-friendly art pieces, enhancing awareness of recycling and cultivating green habits.

Waste sorting requires persistence. How can this “small but crucial task” be carried out effectively over the long term? Aibo Fourth Village in Xinhong Subdistrict offers an answer: by focusing on both hardware and software, integrating public spaces with waste sorting education hubs, and creating a “waste sorting everywhere” atmosphere throughout the community. Nanda Environmental Protection will also assist more communities in building high-standard model spaces that integrate collection, recycling, education, and entertainment, helping waste sorting transform from a “new trend” into a “new daily life” for residents.
